Research Opportunities for Students

The FaMILY Study at Penn State is committed to promoting children's positive development through research and practice. In conjunction with this goal, the study creates a scientific learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students involved.  Undergraduate students who are interested in getting involved in our family research projects can receive up to 3 credits of independent study.  In turn, students work on research activities for 8-10 hours per week, including attendance at weekly lab meetings.  Highly motivated and intellectually curious students who enjoy working with young children and their families are encouraged to contact us about getting involved in the lab.  Students working in the Family Systems Lab learn how to observe a variety of family systems processes, and how research is planned and conducted during laboratory and home research interviews, and lab meetings.  Your responsibilities might include interviewing families, collecting ECG (heart rate) data from parents and children, video recording, child interactions, data entry, coding, and general logistical coordination. These varied activities provide students with valuable experiences in designing and conducting empirical research.  In addition to receiving independent study credit, the experience can be useful for students interesting in continuing to graduate school or attending medical school.
